Department of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology, University Medical Center, Utrecht, The Netherlands Systemic lupus erythematosus is the disease in which the antiphospholipid syndrome was first described more than 20 years ago and which is the most frequent underlying disorder in secondary antiphospholipid syndrome. With respect to pathogenic concepts and treatment, the subjects of this review, no clear distinction between primary and secondary antiphospholipid syndrome can be made.
