Division of Rheumatology, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center/UCLA School of Medicine, Los Angeles, CA, USA Basic science insights along with the assessment of risk factors so clearly documented by the Canadian and Hopkins cohorts in earlier papers of this special issue have clearly led to a change in the way rheumatologists manage SLE. This review will highlight specific ways it should alter our day to day treatment of lupus patients.
